It all began with a game of catch
Andy DeVries and Paul Soltysiak - roughly 10 years apart in age - met each other at a “Play Catch at Sullivan Field” event in 2019. As they tossed the horsehide around, they reminisced and shared stories of playing on the field - with many similarities between them. (They even determined that Andy had served as the paper boy for Paul’s childhood home, which is just across the street from the ballpark.)
They grabbed lunch on the WestSide, and kicked around the idea of starting a facebook group to share stories and photographs with others who shared a similar fondness for this treasured place. This group has now grown to over 4000 members strong!
Along with the City of Grand Rapids - they explored ideas on how to share the space with others in new ways - in addition to improving the baseball experience that the ballpark is based upon.
Other key members joined in - events have been held - and many, many new friendships have been formed as a result. This is the essence of our efforts. Please help us continue our journey to make Sullivan (formerly Valley) Field an even more special place!
Our facebook page states this:
“This group is for enthusiasts of Sullivan Field (formerly Valley Field) in Grand Rapids, Michigan - on the WestSide. For those who grew up playing on it - or those who simply admire this historical jewel. We are working with the city to help honor Mr. Bob Sullivan by restoring and activating this precious ballpark.” The shamrock which appears on the apparel/gear we sell is in homage to Mr. Sullivan. The shamrock was on the sleeves of his teams’ uniforms.
We’re putting on our rally caps in a concerted effort to take things to the next level. Come play with us!
As of this writing, we (Fans of Valley Field and the City of Grand Rapids) has selected the Construction Manager - Rockford Construction - to oversee the upcoming renovations of the ballpark.
The city has $1.1 million slated for the park, as part of the recent tax millage. We hope to raise significantly more to add other elements/features to the park - such as a future museum and ice rink.
